Original thought

Have you ever had an original thought? Don’t jump to a conclusion too fast. Recall the laws in mathematics. Which laws you ask? Distributive, commutative and associative are key properties you can play with in language. But they only give one the illusion of original thought. Example, “why did the chicken cross the road?” A child with early training could easily change it to “why did the dog cross the river?” If done in a classroom full of children then all sorts of interesting twists would be heard. The children with the least amount of training to ‘think out of the box’ would quickly become apparent. But still it is a simple exercise in basic laws of transposing nouns. A computer could be programmed to give the same illusion of ‘original thought’ couldn’t it? When my children were young I challenged them to have an original thought. I promised them $5 for any they could come up with. One day my daughter, Megan, came to me and said she had an idea. She called it a Viega. It would be a device that would let her know where her friends are and what they were doing at all times. I gave her $5. This was before the Internet as we now know it back in 1994 when she was 8 years old.
